Does Aetna Cover Therapy in New York? Everything You Need to Know
If you have Aetna insurance and you've been putting off starting therapy because you're not sure what it costs — this post is for you.
The short answer is yes, Aetna covers therapy in New York. And the even better news? Peace of Mind Therapy is now in-network with Aetna for clients in New York — which means your sessions may be covered at a significantly reduced cost.
Here's everything you need to know.
Does Aetna Cover Mental Health Therapy?
Yes. Aetna covers outpatient mental health therapy under most of its plans. Thanks to the Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act, insurance companies are required to cover mental health services at the same level as physical health services — which means if your Aetna plan covers doctor's visits, it covers therapy too.
The specifics — your copay, deductible, and any session limits — vary depending on your particular plan. But the coverage is there.
Is Peace of Mind Therapy In-Network with Aetna?
Yes! Peace of Mind Therapy is in-network with Aetna for clients located in New York. This means:
You pay your in-network copay per session — not the full out-of-pocket rate
Sessions count toward your in-network deductible
You get the same quality of holistic, integrative telehealth therapy — at a fraction of the cost
This is something we're genuinely excited about. We know cost is one of the biggest barriers to starting therapy — and we want to remove that barrier for as many people as possible.
How Do I Know What My Aetna Plan Covers?
The best way to find out exactly what you're covered for is to send us a picture of the front and back of your insurance card, so that we can find out all of the details for you. You can also call the member services number on the back of your Aetna insurance card. Here are the questions to ask:
Do I have mental health benefits for outpatient therapy?
Is Peace of Mind Therapy in-network with my specific plan?
What is my copay per session?
What is my deductible and how much has been met?
Are there any session limits per year?
It sounds like a lot — but the call usually takes less than 10 minutes and gives you complete clarity before you book your first session.
What If I Have Aetna But I'm in New Jersey?
Our clinicians who are in-network with Aetna are only licensed to work with clients in New York.
If you're in New Jersey, you can work with our clinician who is licensed in New Jersey, but she does not accept insurance at this time, so you'll just be using your out-of-network benefits instead.
Here's how out-of-network works: you pay for your session at the time of service, and we provide you with a monthly superbill — a detailed receipt with everything your insurance company needs to process a reimbursement claim. Many plans reimburse between 60–80% of the session fee after your deductible is met.
To find out your out-of-network benefits call Aetna member services and ask:
Do I have out-of-network mental health benefits?
What percentage of the session fee is reimbursed?
What is my out-of-network deductible and how much has been met?
What If My Aetna Plan Doesn't Cover Therapy?
Some Aetna plans have limited mental health benefits or high deductibles. If your coverage isn't as strong as you'd hoped — don't worry. We have options:
Sliding scale fees. Every therapist on our team offers sliding scale fees based on financial need. Please don't hesitate to ask — we'd rather find a way to make it work than have you go without support.
HSA/FSA. If you have a Health Savings Account or Flexible Spending Account you can typically use those funds to pay for therapy sessions using pre-tax dollars.
What Type of Therapy Does Peace of Mind Offer?
We're a holistic, integrative telehealth group practice — which means we don't rely on a single approach. Our team of licensed therapists draws from somatic therapy, EMDR-informed techniques, attachment-based therapy, CBT, mindfulness, Buddhist psychology, and trauma-informed care — all tailored specifically to you.
We specialize in anxiety, depression, trauma, high-functioning anxiety, relationship patterns, eating disorders, neuro-divergence, life transitions, and more.
All sessions are held via secure video — so you can access high quality therapy from wherever you are in New York or New Jersey.
